2018 was actually pretty weak for Switch game releases. Things were so bad that Octopath Traveler was considered the biggest hit until very late in 2018. 2019 has been much, much, better.

Indulge your inner demon, wreaking mayhem on an unsuspecting village

But it should be noted once again that the lowest Nintendo eShop Cash Card/ Gift Card you can purchase is $10.

Assassin's Creed! Triangle Strategy! A brand new Kirby!

Thumper’s difficulty is suffocating. Along with the oppressive music and the stark graphics, it turns the game into a claustrophobic, stressful, frightening experience. It rattles around inside my brain when I’m not playing it, its velocity and brutality careening throughout as I try to unwind after playing. Thumper taps into art’s ability to alter our consciousness, introducing a new reality for us to get lost in, and it’s not afraid to let this dream world look and feel like a nightmare. Most rhythm games want to replicate the best time you could possibly have at a rave; Thumper wants you to feel like you’re shaking on the floor of a bathroom stall, praying for those weird shapes and sounds that surround you to go away. It is an essentially perfect realization of its own unique goals and concerns, and a game we’ll be playing and celebrating for decades.

Note: Most of the links below are for the physical copies of the games, sold via Amazon, Walmart, GameStop and other retailers. You can alternately buy and download all of these directly from the Nintendo eShop, straight from the Switch. Just make sure you have a microSD memory card with ample capacity to store game data.

Nintendo is releasing Switch versions of a few major games that have existed on other platforms for years now, and if you own another system, the Switch probably won’t be your number one choice for playing them. No Man’s Sky and Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection are each coming to the Switch, but unlike with Portal and Star Wars, we expect that these more modern games will remain better suited for Xbox, PlayStation, and Windows. Although the three titles included in The Ezio Collection—that’s Assassin’s Creed II, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, and Assassin’s Creed Revelations—were originally released over a decade ago, the gameplay doesn’t seem as if it would lend itself to portable play on a handheld Switch, and the graphics seem to reside at the edge of what the console is capable of. If you own only a Switch or you’re excited about portable versions of these games, though, you can grab The Ezio Collection on February 17, and you can play No Man’s Sky when it comes out “this summer.”

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has become an absolute phenomenon last year, and for a lot of people it's now the game to buy a Switch for. The casual, calming, social community game just lasts forever, and a new multiplayer mode allows more than one player to wander around and play at the same time. This co-op game has a lot of ways to connect with other players and friends, too.

@noobish_hat Pretty sure Kirby is only digital in the west, if that. Any link in the article is probably for an import site.

However, if you just want to zone out with some pinball, you don’t need to spend anything to enjoy Zaccaria Pinball.

Our absolute favorite would be Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, if we were to make any recommendations. It features a large roster of drivers, plus, there are several game modes to enjoy, along with the ever-popular online mode against other players from the globe, so you can see who's the best racer in your family.

As one would expect, Pokémon Quest involves you searching for and befriending Pokémon. However, the distinctive cube-art design of the game makes it look different from other Pokémon titles, and its smaller scale (not to mention microtransactions) makes it feel different, too.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate perfects the long-beloved Super Smash Bros. formula for both the button-mashing seven-year-old and the single-minded competitive gamer. It’s the old platform fighter we’ve been obsessed with since 1999, but this time, with a leviathan roster of 76 fighters. Mastering one could eat up a year, but it’s more fun to sample them all. Smash Ultimate is a museum of Nintendo celebrities, a gaming fandom WrestleMania. Everything is customizable: the rulesets, fighter balancing, stage hazards. With all that stuff, and so many ways to manipulate it, Smash Ultimate is a crowd-pleaser that doesn’t discriminate between a middle school birthday party and a stadium of screaming pros.

Link’s Awakening isn’t technically a new game. Instead, it’s a remake of a classic adventure from the original Game Boy. But the remake is so extensive that it feels new. Link’s Awakening might just be the most adorable game on the Switch, thanks to its tiny, diorama-like world, and the game’s quest holds up remarkably well in 2019.

There are certain free games available on the Nintendo Switch eShop, however, most will either not be worth playing at all or have ridiculously obnoxious microtransactions. However, there are a few ‘free’ games that can be downloaded and played if the account is subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online.

The Nintendo Switch is quickly becoming one of the most successful home consoles of all time. It’s already the best-selling Nintendo home console ever. If you have one, you likely play it all the time and might need some new game ideas. To help you out, we have a list below of the best free Nintendo Switch games you can get!

Edit- looks like Ireland shares a store with the UK

One of the weirdest series in the Mario universe, Luigi’s Mansion properly puts a spooky spotlight on an oft-overlooked character. Luigi and his friends are invited to a high-rise hotel only to have things go awfully wrong when the invitation proves to be a trap engineered by King Boo. To rescue his friends, Luigi wades through every floor with help from Polterpup and Professor E. Gadd, as well as his trusty ghost vacuum device. The third installment in this franchise is best enjoyed via handheld mode, where the motion control and vibrations add a hands-on thrill when sucking and smashing poltergeists with Luigi’s vacuum. Its popularity and critical acclaim has kept it on Amazon’s best-seller list for weeks, and earned it a 4.8-star rating from more than 6,000 reviews.

Our tips for getting started in Monster Hunter: Rise

The Nintendo Switch needs good games to keep surging forward. Both Metroid Prime 4 and a Breath of the Wild sequel could be the kind of showcases that bring the Switch to the next level—but it’s still unconfirmed when either of them will be premiering, if ever. Still, there are some big names in the mix for 2020. Here are the 20 best titles for Switch we are most anticipating.

New Pokémon Snap is a fun new take on the beloved Nintendo 64 photography game, and a delightful shot of serotonin that we could all use right now. Like the original, this game lets you go on expeditions, take pictures of adorable Pokémon — from mainstays like Pikachu to newcomers like Scorbunny — and get scored on the quality of your shots while unlocking new regions and features. Capturing the perfect shot of a Pokémon in the wild is just as joyous now as it was in 1999, and it’s made even better on the Switch, thanks to handy motion controls and gorgeous visuals that make the Lental region feel truly alive. The game’s social component is just as addictive as the photo-snapping itself, as you can edit your shots with a variety of fun stickers and filters and then share them with players around the globe.

Warframe is totally free to play and makes its money the same way as many other games on this list: microtransaction upgrades. However, the good news is that you can earn every upgrade in the game through grinding if you don’t want to spend any cash. This levels the playing field a bit, as every player can access every upgrade — although players with money to burn will advance much quicker.

If you’re looking for another free hero-style shooter, you can try Apex Legends, too. You just have to choose your legend and build your crew as you take on battle royale and arena situations. There are in-game transactions as usual, but it doesn’t take away from the fun you can have.

Nintendo eShop Digital Cards are redeemable only through the Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS family of systems.

While it's hard to recommend The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to novice young players, it's easy to recommend it to preteens. As the first truly open-world The Legend of Zelda game, Breath of the Wild is a grand, sweeping experience filled with clever puzzles, tough enemies, and all of the wonder people have come to expect with Zelda games. Breath of the Wild really succeeds in capturing a near unparalleled sense of adventure, whether you're riding on horseback, scaling a mountain, or working your way through a puzzle in one of the many Shrines. It's the type of game that brings adults back to their childhoods, which makes it a rather perfect game to introduce to your own kids as well. For a more classic Zelda experience that's much easier, check out The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening for Switch.

I'm surprised to not see the OPUS games on here. I've only played the first one, but it was quite the experience!

Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 (PS4), PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, PC: Windows

There is a maximum unused account balance that may be stored on a single Nintendo eShop account, and the card may, as a result, be temporarily unredeemable.

Every Nintendo console has its Pokémon games, and the Switch is no exception. Currently the only mainline title on the platform, Pokemon Sword and Shield is the best way to play the classic experience of raising a starter, fighting a team of comical baddies, and catching them all.

Hades is a rogue-like from indie darling Supergiant. As Zagreus, son of Hades himself, fight and flirt your way through the underworld to reach the surface. Built around the run-based nature of the genre, this story is about developing relationships and finding family, which often takes the form of fighting someone.

Streets of Rage has always been beloved, but the sequel is often thought of as the series’ high point. From new mechanics to better graphics, it’s one of the definitive games for the Genesis, and a great starting point for Nintendo kids to get their feet wet with Sega.

Much like the NES Classic and SNES Classic retro consoles, you can switch between visual filters in the apps' menus -- a 4:3 mode, pixel perfect and a fuzzy scan-line-filled CRT mode for the true retro experience.

For one, you need a Nintendo Account - Nintendo’s unified system that replaced the Nintendo Network ID for the Wii U and 3DS. It lets you buy games from the Switch eShop and your purchases are tied to the account. As the Switch allows for multiple Nintendo Accounts, you can create upto eight of them on a single Switch and any account can play games bought on any other. So if you decided to take advantage of US discounts on Switch games, you can play them on another region account you have on your console.

Today Nintendo is known as one of the world's largest video game companies. Society and pop culture at large would not be the same without games like Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokemon.

@Heavyarms55 I get bored very quickly with Smash. It's kind of fun for a little while to play with a group of people, but I never play it by myself. After getting both the wii u and 3ds versions, I decided to pass on Smash ultimate. Despite all the hype surrounding it, I've heard plenty of Nintendo fans say that they don't really care for Smash. I believe there was an opinion piece on this very site about not being able to get into Smash much.

The keystone Mario title for the Nintendo Switch, Super Mario Odyssey, doesn’t disappoint. The latest installment in the Mario franchise brings plenty of fun, new mechanics, and ample charm. Perhaps the most interesting and prevalent twist is Mario’s ability to possess just about anything in the game world, thanks to his new companion, Cappy. Inhabiting creatures and objects isn’t just hilarious — it also plays a big role in solving the Odyssey’s numerous challenges and puzzles.

Ys VIII is higher for me. If I hadn't played it the year before on PS4 it would have been my GotY.

Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 (PS4), PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, PC: Windows

@r0mer0 Planet Alpha is in my top 5 Switch games. AER Memories of Old is probably in the bottom 5 because it was a good game, but the ending is just cruel.

Monster Hunter Rise is the most accessible game in Capcom’s beloved action role-playing series yet, notably adding some exciting upgrades. The addictive gameplay loop is still largely the same here — you hunt down increasingly difficult monsters using your choice of 14 weapons and get rewarded with increasingly cool gear as a result. But thanks to new features such as the Palamute (an adorable dog that you can ride) and the Wirebug (essentially a grappling hook), getting around and hopping into battle in Rise feels better than ever. It also introduces epic Rampage missions that have you take on waves of monsters at a time, and its gorgeous, expansive environments make for one of the best-looking Switch games yet.

With Mario Odyssey, NL talk about how ’post-credits it takes on a life of its own’. Aren’t you just revisiting all the same levels looking for more moons? Or am I missing something? To me, post-credits felt like I was repaying the game all over again, and so I stopped after a couple of worlds.
